Profile, Statistics and Indicators
Neighborhood Description: The Elvehjem Neighborhood is a walkable and bikeable community with a mix of ages, housing, and lifestyles. It is centered around the Elvehjem Elementary School, which is within walking distance of all homes and features a boundless playground for children of all abilities built with the help of a devoted group of parents, volunteers, and businesses. The school borders Elvehjem Park and several acres of conservatory forest. The park has a large reservable shelter, and the conservatory is made up of a mature hardwood forest and prairie. An All-Wheel Spot, a place for skateboards, razor scooters, pedal bikes, etc. is planned for later 2024 replacing the old tennis courts. Droster Park and Acewood Park further enhance the neighborhood. Acewood Park contains young children’s play area, a natural kettle pond and an extension of the Capital City Bike Path, connecting Cottage Grove Road to Buckeye Road. Many services are available at the edge of the neighborhood, such as a pharmacy, vet clinic, gas station, hair salon, and restaurants. The Elvehjem Neighborhood is represented by a very active association and dedicated volunteers who work hard to build community. Our mission is to promote and improve our neighborhood community, provide a forum for neighborhood communication, and offer opportunities for social interaction. All 1,750 households receive quarterly newsletters via postal mail or e-mail, have access to our website and Facebook page, and can sign up for e-mail notices. Our biggest event is the Fourth of July Celebration where the morning starts with a bang at our Firecracker 5K/2 Mile Walk and Kids Fun Run, followed by the bike parade, picnic, games, bounce houses, raffle, and silent auction usually enjoyed by over 200 attendees. We have a Community Garden each year and a monthly book club. The Elvehjem Neighborhood Association has been active since 1968.
