| Neighborhood Description: | Richmond Hill is one of the newer east side neighborhoods. This 138 single-family upscale housing development is located one- half mile east of Interstate 90. Built in the mid-1990s to early 2000s, the single-family neighborhood has two-story modern, Colonial and Ranch homes on larger lots. Richmond Hill Homeowners Association has restrictive covenants that regulate exterior appearance and property use within this residential area. Richmond Hill Park is a place to play. Ten acres of large playfields, basketball and tennis courts, and a shelter will keep the family occupied for hours. The McClean Drive Detention Pond, a 1.6-acre non-mowed area with public access at the corner of Alexandria and McLean, is a special place to go to for a peaceful walk. The western edge of the detention pond is well-manicured with tree and shrub plantings to observe the waterfowl and wildlife that sometimes frequent the area. Don Hovde, the developer of the subdivision, is from Madison but in 1981 President Reagan appointed him Undersecretary of Housing and Urban Development. He and his wife then purchased a home in McLean, VA - a suburb of Washington, D.C. The "Richmond" in Richmond Hill is named after Richmond, VA and all the street names (Alexandria, Manassas, Fredericksburg, etc.) are all taken from Virginia communities located near Washington, D.C. |
